tostandinthedark
To Stand In The Dark - Original Painting by Jo Hards

What if your childhood fear of the dark was not actually fear of the darkness itself, but of the unknown that exists within it? Here, Lilith stands on the threshold between light and darkness, her hands outstretched in the pose of the Magician, hands in a gesture of benediction signalling ‘that which is above is as that which is below’. That which exists in the light, also exists in the dark, and that which exists in the dark, also exists in the light.

The full spectrum of human experience is present all around us, whether we choose to see it, or not. The atrocities that humans commit against others do not cease the moment we look away. Turning on the light may hide the uncomfortable shadows, but it does not make them disappear. Those who choose to face the shadows, to live as their true selves, and those choose to stand in the dark with the oppressed, are often demonised. However, being prepared to sit with the unknown, and to accept that the experience and identity of others matters to them, as much as your experience and identity matters to you, is the first step towards overcoming fear. What have you been taught to be afraid of? Is that fear justified, or is it time to give it another look, from a different perspective?

This unique, original painting is rendered in acrylics on a 6 x 12 inch, deep cradled wooden panel (150mm x 300mm x 35mm). The background is continued on to the edges of the panel. A clear UV resistant varnish has been added to protect the finish and deepen colours. Hanging wire and D ring fittings have been fitted, allowing the painting to be hung flush to the wall with no frame required. A signed certificate of authenticity is included.
