Moon Gazing Hare in Autumn

For thousands of years, hares have been viewed by many cultures as a symbol of fertility and abundance. Their mysterious nature and connection to the full moon made them sacred in the eyes of the Celts. This magickal reputation took a darker turn during the witchcraft trials, when the accused were said to shape-shift into the form of a hare.

Even though I live in the Welsh countryside, I have rarely seen these secretive animals, only occasionally catching a distant glimpse of their athletic form sprinting across the fields before disappearing into the long grass.

I wanted to give this illustration a dream-like storybook feel, so I used Derwent Inktense paints to create vibrant colours, alongside fine liner ink pens.
